and i thought american beauty standards were tough!

I love this picture.
YES, she's holding a machine gun and an ipod..

can this woman's life be ANY further from my reality?

i just love when things get put into perspective.
we get so caught up in our lives, in our reality tunnels, in our understanding of life, that we forget we're not the center of the universe. There's so much going on outside of our personal experience and yet we live our lives as if our personal reality is the Truth.

the universe is HUGE and G-d is infinte (INFINTY, now thats BIG!).
the Truth, however, is that its all really ONE - and that blows me away.

i'm just a tiny drop in an infinite bucket.
it's good for me to remember that - nothing in my life is so drastic, so big, so overwhelming that it cant be dealt with or contained..

Amazing.
As a shadchan who has to convince men that a girl over a size two is not obese, I look at this picture and think of Rabbi Tatz's words when he says that we look at the world through greek eyes- the greek ideal of beauty.
You are so right in saying that there is much more out there than our narcisistic view of life.

You're absolutely right. Things like this bring home how unbelievably subjective our opinions are, especially about things like beauty. If you look at a series of different portrayals of beauty over time, you can see how much has changed even in our narrow Western world. It's cool to be reminded how very much else there is out there.

The face paint reminds me of the impresssionist painter Edward Munch's paiting Scream. I cant help but look at this picture and be horrified that she has to distorte herself in such a way. The ipod and gun along with her dress strikes me as so odd... what kind of life has this girl known? I shudder to imagine.

Yes, there are many different kinds of realities in this world and I admit I too can get way too caught up in myself. We live in one vast universe... it cant be all about us, can it?

Mookie, I applaud you. Your blog is so incredibly refreshing, I can't wait for more!

frumgirl, i love that painting :) i was actually debating betwen the blog picture I posted (the lady in pink pants) and the Scream when I was setting up my blog. in the end i decided that the new and improved - realist - mookie would be better represented by a funny looking lady in pink pants smoking a cigar, then by a screaming lunatic lost in his misery and cyncism.

once again, thank you all for your encouragement and comments!

M00kie I think you should keep looking for a pic that really defines you... something tells me that lady doesnt really depict you at all!

'mookie, what a juxtaposition of cultures in that picture!
It only corroborates what I wrote about in my Yeshiva/Secular post; we need to learn about what's out there. We can appreciate the universe created by Hashem that much more, and the role of Am Yisrael in it...
